Organizational Consultation

I have been offering consultation services for over thirty years.  For the past five years, I have served as the Mental Health Advisor for the Salesians of Don Bosco West, a religious order with communities throughout the western United States.  I have helped to develop policies and procedures for the organizational response to accusations of sexual maltreatment by their members.  I have also developed continuing educational materials on child sexual abuse and how members can maintain healthy boundaries with minors, as well as adults.  I have developed safety plans and supervision procedures so as to reduce risk with individuals identified as having perpetrated abuse in the past.

I have also developed policies and procedures for non-profit and governmental agencies offering services to perpetrators of domestic violence.  The book, Domestic Violence: The Court-Mandated Perpetrator Assessment and Treatment Handbook, is an example of a policy and procedure manual used by agencies around the country in their efforts to provide safe and effective treatment intervention for domestic violence.

Subsequent to the 1980 Loma Prieta Earthquake, I co-developed the Marin Chapter of CAMFT (California Association of Marriage and Family Therapists) Disaster Response Team. This process involved the training of team members about disaster mental health.  Several team members also received training in critical incident stress debriefing.  Since that time, I have offered intervention on trauma recovery for businesses, hospitals and first responders.  I am available to organizations to help develop policies and procedures, and training on crisis response.

Individual Consultation

For the past thirty years, I have offered individual consultation to clinicians wanting to improve their effectiveness with clients.  I offer consultation in the following areas:

  • Domestic violence perpetrators and victims
  • Adults abused as children
  • Trauma resolution
  • Legal and ethical issues
  • Treatment of couples
  • General psychotherapy intervention
  • Incorporating attachment theory into psychotherapeutic practice
  • Incorporating neuroscience into psychotherapeutic practice
  • Preparation for court testimony

Consultation sessions may be conducted in my office, on the telephone, or via the Internet using Skype.  Consultation may occur weekly, monthly, or can be scheduled based on the needs of the clinician.

Training Services

Over the past thirty years, I have conducted hundreds of trainings on domestic violence, child abuse, and attachment theory and neuroscience to thousands of individuals.  These trainings have included independent practice clinicians, criminal justice employees, non-profit agencies, military personnel, and members of religious organizations.  Trainings can last from a few hours, one day, or more than one day.

Forensic Services

I have consulted with prosecuting, defense and civil attorneys, and have testified as an expert witness in following types of cases:

  • Battered women who have killed or injured their perpetrator
  • Batterers who have killed their partner
  • Civil cases involving duress due to domestic violence
  • Standard of care cases involving mental health practitioners
